Before you ask, no, it doesn’t wag when he’s happy.
Mac’s Mission, a licensed dog rescue center in Missouri, uploaded a photo of the puppy with the caption, “Just rescued beside an older dog.” Under the motto “we specialize in special,” the Jackson-based organization focuses on canines with special requirements or rare health concerns who might otherwise struggle in overcrowded shelter systems.
“He was rescued in rural Missouri, where many [dogs] are dumped,” Mac’s Mission explained to IFLScience. “We save dozens of lives this way.” They’re constantly in bad shape.”
Fortunately, he is currently in good hands and appears to be in excellent health. Narwhal was sent to a local veterinarian, who gave him the all-clear with the exception of some easily curable worms that are common in rescue puppies.
The veterinarian also performed X-rays on the dog in an attempt to solve the riddle of his unusual forehead feature. While the source of the birth abnormality is unknown, the extra tail provides no obvious threat to his health.
“The unicorn face tail does not affect Narwhal, and he never slows down like any other dog,” the rescue center said in a Facebook post.
“The extra tail isn’t attached to anything and serves no purpose other than to make him the COOLEST PUPPY EVER,” they added.
“Right now, he’s pretty much the most unique and spectacular representation of what we do here, and we’re so grateful to be a part of his path.”
Narwhal is not yet available for adoption since the team wants to keep an eye on him until he is a little older and stronger. However, judging by the reactions on social media, he has plenty of fans.
He’s certainly one special doggo with a bright future ahead of him!
